How To Brainstorm For Your Product
First of all, there are no prizes for creating a product that turns out to be a beautifully crafted "flop", so market testing is step two.
I mention that first because most folks don't brainstorm the right way. The main reason for that is they simply worry too early in the process that their "big idea" is impractical, won't work, or is going to be a flop.
So, rule number one of the product-brainstorming process is 'don't rule anything out immediately'. You'll narrow down your selection soon, then market test a final idea or two. But for the time being, anything goes - no matter how crazy your idea!
The best possible Idea is probably already in your head!
I bet that your most likely product idea is already embedded in your mind. You may or may not appreciate that it is there, but my goal is to bring your idea out!
There’s a simple truth about product creation...
"The product that you will find easiest to create will be on a subject that you have already mastered!"
Now, up until this moment, you may not have considered yourself to be an expert on anything in particular. However, that’s pretty unlikely. You see, virtually every one of us knows more about some subject or other than the remaining majority of the population.
Think about it: there’s something that you can really claim to have the "inside track" on, but you may have never thought about yourself in this way.
Where to look for your Product Idea?
Start by thinking in the following directions and I guarantee that you'll realize that your knowledge is superior to most in some significant field. Consider any of the following aspects of your life and determine where you best knowledge lies.
Consider your hobbies. Could you write about your favourite hobby? Do you know more than most about fishing, climbing, swimming, flying, DIY, etc, etc.?
Consider your work life. If you are working, think about your current job. If not, think about your past employment(s). What field are you knowledgeable and experienced in? Which industry do you understand best?
Consider your close family members. The next best thing to basing your product on your own experience is to base it on a close relative. Maybe your partner or siblings have specific areas of knowledge and perhaps they’ll be prepared to share that information with you.
