The Summoner : Summoner is all officer of the ecclesiastical court.
He is portrayed as having a pimpled face, a fire-red complexion, scabby brows and a shaggy beard. He was fond of eating garlic and
onion and drinking strong red-coloured wine. Whenever drunk, the Summoner speaks only a few words and that too in Latin which meant
'the question is what law applies', repeating it constantly. The Summoner was morally corrupt. He will allow a person to keep a
mistress for twelve months, only for a quart of wine. He would not also hesitate to seduce a girl, if opportunity is presented. He
told the people not to be afraid of Arch-deacon's curse, (excommunication from the church) because if a good amount of money is paid,
the curse can be overcome. Summoner is described as a character of physical disability, Gastronomic excesses, spiritual hypocrisy and
good fellowship.
The Pardoner : Pardoner is depicted as a seller of indulges, who had
the power for the remission of punishment to repentant sinners. He was also a preacher and a seller of religious relics. He claimed
to have plenty of relics directly obtained from the Pope of Rome. A pillow-case was claimed to be the veil of virgin Mary. A piece of
canvas was described by him as St. Peter's sail and the bones of a pig were exhibited as a mortal remains of a saint. The Pardoner
was a befitting companion for the Summoner and they eventually joined in singing.
Chaucer : Chaucer in the pilgrim’s role assumes to be a simple man with little literary pretensions. He is charged with the
duty of recording the tales told by the pilgrims.
The Host : Harry Bailey, the host of Tabard Inn, is portrayed as a dominating personality. He is an efficient organiser, who
commands the spontaneous respect of all the pilgrims. The importance of the Host in the prologue lies in his proposal to the pilgrims
that they should tell tales during the journey from London to Canterbury and back, in order to entertain themselves. When the
proposal was unanimously accepted, the Host became chairman, stage manager, judge and commentator for the pilgrim’s fictional
narratives.
